Discipleship Ministries Missional Innovation Grant Overview and Eligibility

Discipleship Ministries provides mission and ministry-related grants and awards to Baltimore-Washington United Methodist Churches, organizations, and/or related agencies. These grants are solely for the use of ministries based in the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church and are made possible through apportionment giving, individual giving, grants, partnerships, and some Sunday offerings. Final grant awards are based on the following availability of funds and the ability of the ministry to further the mission of the United Methodist Church through one or more of our strategic focus areas.

Our 2023 Mission Innovation grants for Advocacy and Action, Wellness and Missions, and Young People's Ministry will be awarded to projects that connect and advance ministries that:

  • helps the Young People's Ministry Board make progress on one or more of the goals in their strategic plan
  • has a tested idea to address an aspect of a system of oppression and/or injustice in collaboration with impoverished, marginalized and disenfranchised communities
  •  has a tested idea to educate and support individuals in making it priority to improve health holistically (physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally) for themselves, their congregations, and their communities - including those that are impoverished, marginalized, disenfranchised, and/or recovering from disaster

Priority will be given to projects that clearly demonstrate:

  • Innovative solutions – we want to elevate the power of influencers and social entrepreneurs

  • Collaborative work – projects that are working towards changing systems – we are interested in making an investment to grow the strength for change together

  • Designed to be self-sustaining over time
  • Need-based

Funding may be requested for, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Faith community ministry initiatives
  • Collaborative ministry initiatives
  • Team member training that enhances skills and promotes excellence
  • Training leaders from within the Annual Conference for the benefit of the church

Funding may not be requested for the following:

  • Direct assistance for capital improvements for individual churches or agencies
  • Direct assistance for operational costs to individual churches or agencies

In our effort to build better equity and justice in the Annual Conference for the transformation of the world, join us in centering equity by:

  • Owning the problem
  • Finding opportunities with impacted persons
  • Defining purpose and principles
  • Assessing our traction
  • Framing accountability

BWC Trustees - Building Grants and Loans

Building Grants and Building Loans may be granted to churches and charges that need to do significant building renovations.  Grants are generally given to churches to do renovations in order to develop a new ministry.  Loans are generally given to churches for maintenance such as boiler replacement and roof repairs.  Loans are only given if churches or charges can demonstrate the ability to repay the loan.  Loan applications that are recommended by the Unified Funding Task Force are forwarded to the Conference Board of Trustees for final approval.  Building grants and loans are generally one-time awards.
